Every now and then the black-necked stilts would give us a fly-by at Frank Lake. Unusual and pretty little birds but I found if the light is not right they can be easily confused with American avocets when they fly.

Another oldie but goodie from the vaults. Back in 2012 two pairs of black neck stilts raised their young at Maber Flats near Victoria. It was an unprecedented event and a first for Vancouver Island that has to my knowledge never been repeated.

The differences between new and old in the reflection of the adult bird on the surface of the water.

Here is an image of a black-neck stilt that I photographed at Maber Flats near Victoria in 2012. Used some of the new technology to sharpen it up a bit and remove some noise. Hard to believe that it has been eight years. Taken with the EOS-1D Mark 4 and the old version one 500mm with 1.4X extender. Not bad for only 16MP on the sensor. I remember that the light was harsh that day.
