Here the green heron is alerted by some people and their dogs passing by. I swear that these little guys can make their necks stretch longer than their entire body. This image was cropped to about half frame. No added sharpening and no noise removal. Took it about 150 feet away at 840mm equivalent. Gotta love that 600mm IS2! Viewed better at full size.

Went to Mount Washington today hoping to see some sandhill cranes and ended up at the Courtenay Air Park with a green heron. Who knew? The green heron was having a field day catching insects and small fish from the rocks at the edge of the lagoon. These guys are pretty tiny. It would take about four of them to equal the size of our regular blue herons.

Thought that a few of you might like an environmental image of the green heron. The flowers seemed to add a bit more interest and color to the setting.

Here a green heron preens in the evening sunlight. This shot taken at minimum focusing distance.

This is one that we don't get too often here on Vancouver Island. I have only bumped into them on one other occasion down here in Nanaimo a few years back. Indigenous to places like Florida and California. The green heron is a fairly secretive bird here in B.C. They are about the size of a crow and may be passed by most of the time unseen by onlookers. Most migrate south during winter. It is coveted by photographers for its interesting and colourful plumage and its rare appearances.
