On a hike to the Big Island's, Pololu Valley, we arrived at the valley floor, black sand beach, to see confused honey bees (Apis mellifera) crawling all over the sand. They were getting drowned in the waves or trying to burrow into in the sand, which would have the same end result. I described the observation to an entomologist, who explained to me that sometimes when the queen bee is seeking a new nesting site, some of the worker bees become confused and lose their way.
