All of my neighbors know that I photograph birds, so when one of them saw a hawk "drop down" from high above, onto the lawn two doors down the street, she ran to my house to alert me. I grabbed my camera, raced outside, and watched the drama unfold. The Red-tailed Hawk had captured a squirrel. It sat still for sometime, with the squirrel clutched in it's talons, then began to feed. When the hawk tried to take flight, it couldn't quite get off the ground, so it hopped on one foot, dragging the dead squirrel with the other foot, finally managing to hide behind a set of bushes to dine in peace. Later, I took a walk and just a few blocks away, discovered a large nest, which looks like one a Red-tailed Hawk would build, but it was not occupied when I took the shot. I'll be checking back to see whether anyone is home. Taken in Orland Park, Illinois
