Compositionally Challenges
Week 8: Feel better soon

The first flowers of the year definitively improve my mood significantly. It‘s such a miracle everytime it happens.

Shot with an Angenieux "AX Type 75 90-95 mm F 1.6" (projection) lens on a Canon EOS R5.

Taken a few years ago on a little Leica point-and-shoot digital camera (sold long ago) with a fixed 35mm equivalent lens. This was my first ever outing with it and I took it into Croydon where the heavens promptly opened up with a deluge of biblical proportions. I ducked into a coffee shop and this scene emerged directly in front of where I was sitting.

A few years ago I acquired one of the most desirable vintage lenses out there, one that came with a big reputation. In fact this is NOT shot with that lens (a Meyer Optik Goerlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9) but it bears mentioning because on the day I took this I had the Primoplan with me as well as the lens I took this with, a lowly (in price only) Helios 44M that I picked up for something like £20. I shot the two lenses side by side for a couple of hours, one on each of my mirrorless cameras. In fact it was a good test. The Primoplan was as good as I had hoped but the pictures I got with the Helios weren’t far behind. I was blessed with fantastic early morning light that morning, which always helps, but the possibilities with these vintage lenses really are endless.

This shot was taken with the same old Leica lens that I used for the shot of St Paul's Cathedral that I posted a few days back. It's a 90mm lens but when I adapt it to use on my Olympus Micro 4/3s camera, with it's crop sensor, it effectively becomes a 180mm lens. Using a telephoto lens that long will inevitably introduce a lot of compression into an image and you see that phenomenon very clearly here. The chimney tower on the right, which stands on top of the Tate Modern museum, is approximately 250 meters away. Meanwhile the slightly taller Shard building on the left is approximately 1100 meters away (distances measured in Google maps). The Shard is 306 meters high, the Tate chimney tower is 99 meters high.
