In just over a month we shall be returning to our holiday home in the far north of Lancashire. The Yorkshire Dales are about half an hour away. Over the years the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park have expanded and it now includes the whole of the Howgill Fells near Sedbergh in Cumbria. Since early 2023 Cumbria itself has been abolished, though we may now call it "the ceremonial county of Cumbria". Presumably that saves the cost of new road signs. I shall simply continue to refer to it as Cumbria. Until 1974 this part was formerly in the West Riding of Yorkshire. What a shame they didn't leave it as it was.
