Clan Line was doing a Pullman Dining tour. It left Victoria at 1228 to run to Shalford for 1420 arrival via Richmond, Chertsey and Woking. It then left Shalford at 1440 to return to Victoria by 1605 via Redhill and Selhurst. Here at St Margarets it was 10 minutes early after signallers decided to put it in front of a train that it was meant to be behind, but got held up at Whitton because of pathing!
There was a Class 66 locomotive both behind the steam engine and right at the end of the formation, in case the dry weather resulted in steam haulage being banned due to risk of fire.
