Didn't catch any shooting stars but did get nice views of the Milky Way near Franconia Ridge and faint airglow (green running through middle frame) while taking my selfie.

I wanted to get out and shoot this morning, no matter what the weather. In fact, I was anticipating clear skies when I checked the satellite at 4:15 AM. Through my cloudy eyes, I could see a small bank of low clouds covering the sky from Freeport to Augusta. This had potential. I was already kicking myself for not getting up earlier as I drove down Route 1 towards Bath, eye on what was looking like a very promising sky. The clouds were already underlit, fringed with warm shades that signified a good sunrise.

My intial goal was to make it out to Five Islands, but I was running short on time. Whenever a big light show like this promises, I get crazy-brain. I want to be everywhere at once. I go over locations in my head until I settle on something within reach. I actually pulled off for 5 minutes into downtown Bath, considering a shot of the waterfront. I scoped it out, but wan't feeling inspired by anything I saw, so back on Route 1 and across the bridge with even less time to reach my final location.

As I jetted down the Georgetown peninsula, views opening to the northwest started showing the pink clouds I'm always hoping for. I had to make my move. Almost to Five Islands, I turned left at the last minute and made for Robinhood Marina. I'd been out here before, scouting possible locations. The defining feature, for me, was a small white arch-bridge that connected the docks.

Lining up this shot was tough. There really wasn't a good place to stand here, so I made do by setting the tripod on top of some timbers and contorted myself to get the angle I wanted, with the sunrise lined up right behind the bridge. I made a few exposures and within 5 minutes the pink clouds were gone.

So no Milky Way craziness here! Just a good old fashioned seascape sunrise. I think it's been almost a year since I've been out for a straight up sunrise shoot on the ocean and man it was great to get my feet wet both figuratively and literally.

Charlie Widdis and I had images to drop off for the Maine Photography Show in Boothbay yesterday so took the opportunity to squeeze in a quick shoot at Reid State Park.

There are many times where I feel I want to travel the world to find new and exciting places to make images but days like this remind me that there are still places in my own backyard to explore.
