A Kodachrome slide dated December 1968.

Although there doesn't seem to be anything playing on the television, I doubt that the kids would be that transfixed by a blank TV screen.

"New Ideal Diner, U.S. Route 40, Aberdeen, Maryland."

I took photos of the New Ideal Diner and its Ideal Diner sign when I visited in 2006, but the eatery evidently closed in 2011. Anyone know whether the building is still standing?

A Farmer's Love Letter

Do you care at (carrot) all for me, for my heart beats (beets) for you and my love is as soft as a squash but as strong as an onion. For you are a peach with your reddish (radish) hair and turned-up (turnip) nose. You are the apple of my eye, so if we can't elope (cantaloupe) then let us (lettuce) marry anyhow, for I know we could make a happy pair (pear)."

This is a postcard dated 1914. See also a more recent fill-in-the-blanks version: A Farmer's Love Letter (below).

"We parked our car in this world's largest parking lot between 16th and 26th Sts. on Columbus Drive. Heiberg-Webster Photo."

In 1933 and 1934, visitors to A Century of Progress International Exposition--also known as the Chicago World's Fair--could park their cars in the "world's largest parking lot." I hope they were able to remember which row they parked in!
