This is a colorful embossed cardboard sign advertising Collins & Co., a manufacturer of axes and other tools. The clever ad plays on the double meaning of "axes." It's the plural of "axe" -- the kind of tool that Collins & Co. was selling -- but it's also the plural of "axis," illustrated here by the globes that represent the earth's axis of rotation.

For a brief history of the company, see Ann Marie Somma, World-renowned Maker of Axes: The Collins Company of Canton, a posting on ConnecticutHistory.org.

For a detail showing the text of the label on the axe, see The Axes of the World Are Collins (Label Detail).

This is the cover of a 1967 program booklet for the annual Fersommling (gathering) of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw (Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh), which is one of a number of Groundhog Lodges that -- beginning in the 1930s -- meet on or about Groundhog Day (February 2) each year to promote the Pennsylvania Dutch Language.

Parodies of current events frequently appear as illustrations on the covers of the Fersommling booklets, and this one is no exception. With the Space Race in full swing during the 1960s, it's not surprising to see a groundhog astronaut traveling in a command module spacecraft labeled Wedder Schiff, USA (Pennsylvania Dutch for Weather Ship, USA). Two rockets -- Winder Wedder and Summer Wedder (Summer Weather and Winter Weather) are nearby. A satellite, the Earth, and the Sun complete the picture.

For more space-based groundhogs, see Groundhog on the Moon, 1958 and Groundhog Moon Landing, 1970.

Text on the cover of the program booklet:

"Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw. Die Ain-un-Dreizicht Yairlich Fersommling uns Fesht 1967, der 2d Harnung om halver siva, Northampton Community Center."

"Wedder Schiff, USA. Winder Wedder. Summer Wedder."

Translation from the Pennsylvania Dutch:

"Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh. The Thirty-first Annual Gathering and Feast 1967. February 2 at 7:30, Northampton Community Center."

"Weather Ship, USA. Winter Weather. Summer Weather."

A groundhog was there to greet Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as they descended in their lunar lander during the first moon landing in 1969. Or at least that's how it looked in this illustration from the cover of a 1970 program booklet for the annual Fersommling (gathering) of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw (Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh).

Groundhog Lodge events like the annual Fersommlinge (also spelled Versommlinge) are held on or around Groundhog Day (February 2) and promote the use of the Pennsylvania Dutch language. They often feature skits and speeches that humorously comment on current events in the same way that this cover provides an amusing take on the moon landing that occurred the year before this 1970 get-together.

For some more out-of-this-world groundhogs, see Groundhog on the Moon, 1958 and Groundhog in Space, 1967.

Text on the cover of the program booklet:

"Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw. Die Fier un Dreisicht Yairlich Fersommling uns Fesht. Da Tzwet Harnung, 1970 om halver sivva, Northampton Community Center."

"Wilkum."

Translation from the Pennsylvania Dutch:

"Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh. The Thirty-fourth Annual Gathering and Feast. February 2, 1970, at 7:30, Northampton Community Center."

"Welcome."

This is the cover of a 1958 program booklet for the annual Fersommling (gathering) of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw (Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh).

This group is one of several Groundhog Lodges that began meeting in the 1930s to promote the Pennsylvania Dutch language, and their get-togethers often take place on or near Groundhog Day (February 2) each year. These lodges, however, are not related to the celebrations featuring the nationally known Punxsutawney Phil, who's been prognosticating the weather for the Punxsutawney, Pa., Groundhog Club since 1886,

The annual lodge Fersommlinge are gatherings that feature humorous skits and speeches poking fun at current events, and that's also the case with this cover illustration by cartoonist Bud Tamblyn.

The Space Age was brand new when Tamblyn designed the cover. It began in October 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial earth satellite, followed a month later by Sputnik 2, which carried Laika the Soviet space dog. Judging by the illustration, however, it was a groundhog that made it to the moon first. You can see poor little Laiki looking out from its gray Sputnik spacecraft as it travels above the Earth.

The groundhog on the moon is holding a lever as he decides whether to switch it to Summer Wedder (Pennsylvania Dutch for "summer weather") or Winder Wedder ("winter weather").

For other groundhog astronauts, see Groundhog in Space, 1967 and Groundhog Moon Landing, 1970.

Text on the cover of the program booklet:

"Die Tzwae un Tzwonsich Fersommling uns Fesht fon da Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw, der 3'd Harnung 1958 om halver siva, Northampton Community Center."

"Summer Wedder. Winder Wedder."

Translation from the Pennsylvania Dutch:

"The Twenty-second Annual Gathering and Feast of the Groundhog Lodge Number One on the Lehigh, February 3, 1958, at 7:30, Northampton Community Center."

"Summer Weather. Winter Weather."
