Quite a gusty day, and pilot John Romain had to make some sharp manoeuvres to bring his Spitfire safely home.
This reconnaissance aircraft is Spitfire PR.Mk XI PL983, built in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war taking aerial photographs over Europe. The late autumn sun shows off the blue, high altitude, camouflage. These aircraft flew solo missions at heights of around 40,000 feet, and of course, back then, paint with a matt finish was used.
The black and white stripes commemorate those applied to all Allied aircraft just before the D-Day invasion of 6th June 1944 to help reduce 'friendly fire' incidents.
In the background, we can see St John's Church in the village of Duxford. Not as close as it appears, it is about 1km or 2/3 mile beyond the aircraft.
