The amazing Mil V-12 remains the largest helicopter ever built.
The first prototype flew in 1968 and in 1969 it set eight world records, four of which still stand. In 1971 it left Russia for the one and only time when it attended the Paris Air Show.
This is the second prototype which first flew in March 1973.
Strangely, both carried the registration 'CCCP-21142'.
The type never went into production as the need to transport ICBMs (InterContinental Ballistic Missiles) had reduced.
The first prototype was retired to the Mil factory, while the second has been on display at Monino since August 1975.
Originally in standard Aeroflot colours, it had recently been repainted in a rather 'green' looking scheme at the time of our visit.
