Morris Room, 1866-8
The green room was designed by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., the decorating firm that William Morris set up in 1861. It was his first public commission. Later, Morris became the most important designer and art theorist in 19th-century Britain.
Most of the architecture in the new museum is classical in style, but Morris turned to the Middle Ages for inspiration. He worked in collaboration with the architect Philip Webb, who designed the plasterwork, and the artist Edward Burne-Jones, who created the figures in the stained glass and on the walls.
