Using all plastic bodies with a diecast metal baseplate to compensate is certainly not just the preserve of Mattel. Other toy makers have been doing it for decades notably the short-lived range made by a the Portuguese Minia Porta and sold under their Novacar brand. Briefly produced sometime in the 1990's before they were taken over by Majorette they were seen as a fairly decent budget alternative to the usual big boys and even made their way over to the U.K. where I remember seeing them infrequently in discount stores.
This is their Ferrari Testarossa which I suspect was unlicensed but remarkably accurate and indeed pretty crisp in its appearance. Given to me recently as a kind gift its in mint and boxed condition.
