The Jin Mao tower in Shanghai's Pudong district (as viewed from the base of the Oriental Pearl) was for several years after it's completion (and when I took this photo) China's tallest building (from 1998-2007), but has since been overshadowed by it's neighbour, the Shanghai Financial Centre (construction of which had only just begun when I took this).
The distinctive, undulating form of the tower is based on the traditional pagoda, updated in modernist form on a vast scale.
The tower can be ascended to the observation deck on the top floor beneath the spire. From here sweeping views can be enjoyed of the city and the nearby Oriental Pearl. There is also a dramatic interior view to behold as one looks down through a skylight into the hollow centre of the tower's upper half (which also serves as a hotel).
