The central tower at Clifton seems to have grown somewhat organically in several stages throughout the Middle Ages
St Mary's church at Clifton stands in a peaceful enclave close to the edge of Nottingham. It is a fine cruciform building with a lofty central tower and plenty of interest within, including a splendid group of monuments in the north transept.
The church was restored by noted architect George Pace in the 1960s which resulted in some colourful redecoration and bold modern features such as the nave ceiling and organ.
This is a hugely rewarding church to visit, though alas I believe it is normally kept locked.
