Detail of a 19th century cast of the magnificent reliefs decorating the grand staircases of the great Palace of Darius at Persepolis, c440 BC.
Persepolis, the Palace of the ancient Persian rulers was one of the most magnificent creations of the ancient world.
It's demise came when Alexander the Great conquered the city and sadly (and needlessly) ransacked and burned down the great palace as a final humilaition to the conquered Persians (apparently revenge for the sacking of Athens in the 5th century BC), thus present day Iranians don't add the suffix 'Great' to Alexander's name!
