The chapel at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital dates from 1875 and was built to the designs of Edward Middleton Barry. It is the only surviving part of the old Victorian hospital and was moved in one piece to its present location in the 1980s after demolition of the surrounding complex. It thus comes as a complete surprise to walk the light modern corridors of the new hospital building and find this shimmering room hidden within it.
The interior of the chapel is one of the richest examples of Victorian design, sumptuously adorned throughout with painting and gilding culminating in the magnificent domed ceiling at the centre. It is not a large building at all, quite an intimate space in fact, which just adds to the experience, making the visitor feel as though one has just wandered into a jewel box!

Window by Burlison & Grylls c1918 in the south aisle.
St Michael & All Angels church at Bugbrooke dates back mainly to the 13th & 14th centuries and is an attractive structure with a west tower and spire built of warm toned and richly patinated stone.
Inside the surfaces have been stripped back to the stonework though it retains more light than some, despite having much late Victorian glass. The chancel is a rather gloomier space adorned with memorial tablets to members of the Whitfield family.
The church is generally kept open and welcoming to visitors via a new entrance in the north porch.
