Rotherwas Chapel stands on the site of a medieval building but the present structure dates back to rebuilding in 1580 and subsequent alterations including much Victorian modification. It was the private chapel of the Bodenham family (whose nearby mansion has long since vanished) and with the family's conversion to Catholicism in 1606 the church was used for Catholic worship, making it one of the oldest Catholic churches in the country. The church was left redundant following the demise of the adjacent mansion and was taken into the care of the state in 1928.
Today the chapel stands in the rather alien environment of an industrial estate south east of Hereford. It is maintained by English Heritage and can be visited, though not on the day I called as the key is only available on weekdays and certain Saturdays so I couldn't get inside. (there was no information whatsoever on how to gain access when I was here, though I have since seen evidence from others that this situation has improved with the notice-board bearing details again).
