Wat Xieng Thong (Temple of the Golden City) is celebrated as the most beautiful and ornate of Luang Prabang's many shrines, and formerly served as a royal temple up until the end of the Lao monarchy. The complex dates back to the mid 16th century and consists of a number of exquisite prayer halls and chapels in an attractive setting surrounded by a bend in the river.

The most memorable feature of the temple's buildings is the richness of the decoration: in addition to the usual gilded and coloured woodwork of the main structures there are some stunning reliefs in gilded wood adorning certain buildings and also (more unusually) several examples of mosaic decoration with figurative subjects executed in glass inlay on a red stuccoed background and a striking image of a tree on the rear side of the main temple.

It's impoossible not to be both impressed and charmed by the beauty of this place, and no visitor to Luang Prabang should miss it.
