It was a disappointing trip down to Portland Bill to watch Storm Arwen batter the famous cliff and lighthouse – winds were gusting at up to 60 mph, but I hadn’t appreciated that as they were coming from inland and out to sea that the cliffs acted as a windbreak and the water in front of me was more or less calm.
The light though was pretty good, and I managed to get some nice cloud and sunbeam shots as well as explore the lighthouse itself which was open to visitors despite the storm (literally) blowing a gale outside

Trwyn Du Lighthouse, also known as Penmon Lighthouse, is a lighthouse between Black Point near Penmon and Ynys Seiriol, or Puffin Island, at the eastern extremity of Anglesey, marking the passage between the two islands.
The present Lighthouse, built 1835–1838, is 29 metres (95') tall and was designed by James Walker.
The Lighthouse has a stepped-base designed to discourage the huge upsurge of waves that had afflicted earlier lighthouses on the site and reduce the force of the water at the bottom of the tower.
Austere vertical walls, instead of the usual graceful lines of other rock towers, are probably an economy measure. The tower has a crenellated stone parapet, in preference to iron railings on the gallery, and narrows in diameter above the half-way point.
The tower is distinguished by its original three black bands painted on a white background. Its also bears the words "NO PASSAGE LANDWARD" on its north and south sides.
In 1922 Trwyn Du became the first Trinity House lighthouse to be automated

Whiteford Sands and Whiteford Point Lighthouse are located on the north-western tip of the Gower peninsula in South Wales.
This is a vast two mile expanse of sandy beach leading out along the edge of the Loughor Estuary backed by pine trees. This area is a nature reserve owned by the National Trust.
The decommissioned cast iron lighthouse found at the furthest northern tip of the beach is believed to be the last remaining cast iron lighthouse found in British Isles.
The Llanelli Harbour and Burry Navigation Commissioners constructed the lighthouse in 1865 to mark the south side of the channel to the port of Llanelli; it replaced an earlier wooden structure of 1854. The lighthouse remained in use until 1933; more recently the Nature Conservancy Council took up the lease from the Llanelli Harbour Trust.
