In 1973 a volkano eruption started in Vestmannaeyjar only inhabited island, Heimaey. The volkano fissure opened just a short way east of the town, through a farmland. It started just before midnight. It was clear from the start that the town and its 3500 inhabitants + tens or hundreds of seamen and fishfactory workers. The ntight before the weather had been very bad and all the fishingboats were in harbour, Many were awake because the boats should leave during the night, as the weather was gone down. I few hours al the people were sailed to the mainland and sheltered in schools in Þorlákshöfn and Reykjavík.
