Yesterday, 18 February 2024, I managed to get out for another drive, this time W and SW of Calgary. I was a bit hesitant to do another drive, after experiencing a lot more pain after my previous outing. However, spring is here and I have been missing everything, so I'm hoping to start getting out more.
There were a few birds that I would have liked to see, but my afternoon ended up being pretty much a barn drive. Always OK with me. The handful of bird photos I did take were pretty grim - either too far away or just not pleasant to look at. I have added a poor American Robin shot, just for my own record. A few other species included maybe half a dozen Trumpeter Swans way out on a large pond, a couple of Ravens, and a Red-winged Blackbird male calling to hopefully attract a female.
The weather was not what I was expecting! A mix of sunshine and cloud turned into wind and, in a couple of places, very light snow falling. Remember, I live in Alberta, where crazy weather happens all the time. This may have kept a lot of birds hidden.
I did break up my drive, partly to give my back and leg a change of position, but also to call in at Rancher's Corner to get a Cheeseburger and pan fries. Normally, I never think of eating burgers, but these ones are SO good. What a warm welcome I got, too - so nice. A great place to stop at when on a drive SW of the city.
