I had hoped to post a few bright, colourful images from my archives today. Instead, I decided to do another drive SW and SE of Calgary, so I am black to winter colours. On the two previous drives to these areas, I had only seen one Bald Eagle way down the road and it flew before I got a chance to take a shot. So, keeping my fingers crossed that I might do better this time, I once again faced the wet, muddy, gravel back roads. I still only saw five of these majestic birds of prey, and two of them might have been the same bird but taken at nearby locations. Both times, the bird stayed on its post, letting me take a few shots. When I checked on my camera, the images looked nice and sharp. However, when I looked at them later on my computer, almost every single photo was blurry as can be and have now been deleted. Not sure what went wrong. I tried to focus on they eye, so maybe the glaring white head feathers messed up the exposure? Fortunately, a handful of shots came out differently.

Of course, I kept my eyes open for the Turkey Vulture that I had seen on one of my previous drives. This time, no sign of it at all. I noticed that friends had been driving in the area yesterday, too, and apparently they didn't see it.

Our snow is gradually melting, as we are now into the seventh month of continuous snow and ice on the ground. More snow is forecast for the first three days of April.

This find was such a surprise. In fact, I drove past the tree, which was set back away from the road, and then suddenly realizing that there was a nest and having the feeling that maybe I saw something on the nest. Did a U-turn to check and this is what I saw. This pair eventually had three owlets.

Wet, muddy, gravel backroads are not my favourite roads to drive on!
