Good Friday - 7 April 2023. Happy Easter weekend to all who celebrate Easter.

Friday, 7 April 2023: our temperature is PLUS 16°C (wind chill PLUS 15°C). Spring has come suddenly after so many snowy days. Sunrise was at 6:56 am and sunset will be at 8:20 pm. Snow is melting fast.

Starlings are not popular birds for many people, but I think they are beautiful birds and am always happy if I can photograph one.

Yesterday, 6 April 2023, I made another drive similar to the last few drives, SW and SE of Calgary. The weather has been mild recently and so I thought I would go and enjoy some time with beautiful views of our mountains that are still covered in snow.

For the first part of my drive, I began to wonder if I was going to go home having seen nothing. The first birds I did see were a couple of Swans out in a 'big puddle' in a field. The busy road was not safe to stop and take a photo, but it was nice to see these large, white birds who have returned.

I did drive past a Great Horned Owl pair, resting in their nest. As far as Bald Eagles were concerned, I saw none in the area SW of the city, unlike a week ago, when I saw one perched on a power pole, close enough for photos. Funny, because a bit later in the day, in the SE on my way home, I spotted a Bald Eagle on a power pole. Funny how my photo looks as if it was the same bird in my photos taken last week.

Silly though it might sound, I think perhaps the highlight of yesterday for me was coming across maybe eight or so European Starlings hanging out near a farm. Just managed to grab several photos when one of them stopped long enough, perched on the barbed-wire. They have such beautiful feathers and iridescence.
