Wednesday, December 21: Shortest day of 2016

The word solstice comes from the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still.” In the Northern Hemisphere, as summer advances to winter, the points on the horizon where the Sun rises and sets advance southward each day; the high point in the Sun’s daily path across the sky, which occurs at local noon, also moves southward each day.

At the winter solstice, the Sun’s path has reached its southernmost position. The next day, the path will advance northward. However, a few days before and after the winter solstice, the change is so slight that the Sun’s path seems to stay the same, or stand still. The Sun is directly overhead at “high-noon” on Winter Solstice at the latitude called the Tropic of Capricorn. Old Farmer's Almanac (founded in 1792)

Captured from inside our car yesterday in rainy, dreary weather.

The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus, from Greek hali "sea", aiētos "eagle", leuco "white", cephalos "head") is a bird of prey found in North America. [...]. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and 1 metric ton (1.1 short tons) in weight. Wikipedia

The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These regal birds aren’t really bald, but their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings. [...]. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection. [...].

Adult Bald Eagles have white heads and tails with dark brown bodies and wings. Their legs and bills are bright yellow. Immature birds have mostly dark heads and tails; their brown wings and bodies are mottled with white in varying amounts. Young birds attain adult plumage in about five years. "And the clouds took it along
For all to enjoy"

Donated by: Johan (Joop) Meuldyk and Hermann F. Itzinger

Seen on our Christmas morning walk along the popular 1.7-kilometre Centennial Seawalk which extends from the bottom of 18th Street to Dundarave Park. This walk has scenic views of Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, UBC, Point Grey, Stanley Park, The Lions Gate Bridge, the West Vancouver skyline and cruise ships passing by in the summer.

The Friendship Globe was donated by members of the German Community of Greater Vancouver, led by Harald Lincke, a long-time West Vancouver resident.

The German friendship globe at Dundarave Park in West Vancouver is made of granite and floats on a thin layer of pressured water. You can turn the 2.5 ton globe with just your baby finger.

The globe is in the small park, right at the Beach House Cafe, just up from the Dundarave Pier, and at the end of the Centennial Sea Walk.
