Shield Shrimp...just back from 3 weeks to the Red Centre and similar regions and found these bizarre creatures in a fast evaporating pool of water left over from recent rains. This from east of Coober Pedy in a mostly dry creek bed. Coober Pedy and much of the Red Centre including Uluru is mostly a sea of wildflowers and greenery, a 50 year event so I was told. These unusual Shrimp only exist in the arid regions of Australia and only emerge from the eggs when conditions are favorable, much like Brine Shrimp. They can lay dormant in the eggs for many years until it rains. Interesting enough they also breathe through their legs apparently. These were numerous in one muddy pool, some seemingly attempting to crawl out, I've never seen them before and thought they were rather interesting
