History - In 1324 building commenced on Tallaght Castle finished sometime before 1349 this castle was on the site of the Priory. One hundred years later it was reported that the castle was in need of repair. When Archbishop Hoadley replaced Archbishop King in 1729 he found the castle in ruins he demolished the the castle and built himself a palace at a cost of £2,500. By 1821 the palace to had fallen into ruin and an Act of Parliament was passed which said that it was unfit for habitation. The following it was sold to Major Palmer, who was the Inspector General of Prison she pulled the palace down and used the material to build his mansion, Tallaght House as well as a school house and several cottages. Tallaght house is now incorporated in the building at St Mary's Priory.
