Free as the air
The bird in the snare sang its song;
You took it and gave The air that on branches was hung;
In Bride Street your saw
The flash of the linnet Alight on the back of your mind,
Where the meadows were full,
The seed brought to earth by the wind.

But nothing lasts for ever, nothing last for long
We make for ourselves the story, the poem or the tune or the song;
Life is like the linnet, flitting here and there The singer like the river that gives to time its air.

In the blue of the road
You mirrored the pain of the heart,
Each wheel rut had mapped
The hard life of wagon, of cart;
On the rim of the drum
You fastened the skin And beat out a march for our time;
In the depths of our hearts
You planted the reason, the rhyme.

Tribute to Liam Weldon by Frank Callery

And your cry woke up a nation, your shout was ‘Liberty!’ The notes of your song were simple, just enough to let us see How we had to march together, we could not walk alone, We like feckless pebbles, you ‘the steadfast stone”.

Come eagle cry!
Give voice to the pain in your soul, Again tell us why Each part must be part of the whole. Sing for us now
Who are caged like the bird
You took from the branch for its song And give us the note Of freedom, show us the right from the wrong.

The Jinny Joe, the Fraughan, the fallen, last wild leaf
Time has taken from us, time is that wanton thief;
But you ride with the old Gods,
Pagan, bold and kind The sparks on the road behind you, dark horse on the wind.

Nothing lasts for ever, nothing last for long You told us of the hard road, you gave to us the song;
And you were like the linnet, who broke free of the cage:
The singer of our conscience, the conscience of our age. — © Frank Callery,
