Hi Ken,

photo from the Black Diamonds team from 1965.

The picture was taken at the semi-final of the Cunningham Cup between Black Diamonds and Orchard Villa in which Diamonds won 3-2.

The team went on to beat Sloans 1-0 in the final at Richmond Park.

Regards,

The Ballyfermot Festival Group awarded Pam O Reilly and Marie Dodrill with awards for the outstanding voluntary work in Ballyfermot down the years

Tonight we honoured two very special people. Pam O Reilly and Marie Dodrill These awards, The Countess Markievicz Awards were presented to two Ballyfermot women who have embodied the ideals/goals of Countess Markievicz throughout their lives. Markievicz was a remarkable woman who was a tireless worker with the poor and dispossessed, a politician and a revolutionary despite her privileged background. Indeed her story is a story of a woman of determination, independence, idealism and self sacrifice in pursuit of freedom for Irish people. Whilst our two recipients of the awards tonight never entered national politics they have worked tirelessly over at least 50 years to improve the quality of life for Ballyfermot people through their involvement in different community organisations. They were very young women when they first became involved.
Our first recipient Pam O' Reilly from Blackditch Road was a very active member of the Ballyfermot Community Association at street, area, council and executive level. Pam had a vision of what was needed to improve life for people in Ballyfermot in the areas of facilities needed, transport, education, sports, childcare and women's health. Never shy to express her opinion she challenged politicians, Dublin City Council officials, HSE officials, and educational officials about the needs of our community. She was a member of the Education Subcommittee that successfully ensured the building of the Senior College. She was very much a leader in the various committees she joined, taking on busy, demanding roles like secretary of the Sports Federation whilst being a model mother to her six children and wife to her late husband Peter.
Her path crossed with the second recipient of the award tonight, Marie Dodrill from Decies Road. Both Marie and Pam were members of the Sports Federation and the action group that secured the building of the Sports Complex on Gurteen Road. Marie was a leader and organiser in the Black Diamond Football Club and a key person in the Man United Supporters Club. She is a well know voluntary worker in the Ballyfermot Credit Union for the last ten years. Marie like Pam raised her two children along with her late husband Paddy whilst taking on very busy roles in the organisations she was involved in and working full time herself.
These two women have through their work over the past 50 years ensured that life in Ballyfermot has improved for all. They are hardworking, determined, good humoured women who well deserve The Countess Markievicz Award. They are still active and involved in the community. Tonight is our opportunity to thank them for all their hard work, vision and commitment to Ballyfermot.
