The 14 December 1959 The first public small branch library opened in Drumfinn. The librarian was Pat Johnston who later became curator of the Dublin Civic Museum.
In 1977 the library was moved to a new location and became part of Vocational School on Kylemore Road.
June 1981 saw a multi-purpose community Library opened its doors. The Lord Mayor of Dublin Fergus O’ Brien preformed the opening on the then named Glass Road in Ballyfermot. The children entered into a new world of not only books but creative toys and games, paintings and listen to as well as reading stories. Adults also entered in a very new community experience as there were rooms for residential meetings, all sorts of clubs in the area could come together for discussions. People could make their own video tapes and show them in the library. Ballyfermot Library was designed very specially with the needs of the people of Ballyfermot in mind, and designed to give space and comfort and relaxation to the people using it.
The National Rehabilitation Centre was also involved in the initial planning of Ballyfermot Library for the health and safety of people with any disabilities making Ballyfermot Library a total community library for all to enjoy today
