We would like to welcome along Una, Anne, Ann Marie, Fiona and Peter who are part of the Ballyfermot Library, and who have been so helpful to us over many years and also Catherine Scuffill DCU Historian in Residence. We consider you all as an extension to the Ballyfermot Heritage group.
Thursday January 9 2003 Civic Centre Sarah Gorman, Urban Ballyfermot along with Vincent McManus Joe Coleman Vincent Jackson, Michael Conaghan, and myself went about the setting up of the Ballyfermot Heritage group
On Thursday January 16 the very first meeting began, Vincent McManus was elected Chairman and so were here today to Celebrate 20 Anniversary
Our motto from day one is Drop in, Say hello, and share a memory. One of the articles of our mission statement is that Ballyfermot Heritage Group will raise awareness to every resident in Ballyfermot and around the world of their heritage and History
Some of the work over the years: We arranged, since 2003, Ballyfermot Heritage week, now we call it Ballyfermot Heritage day. We bring heritage and history talks into the schools, hospitals, day care units, libraries and churches. Recording all history of Ballyfermot through photos and interviewing people on video which we have managed to document all this information, through Social Media. We also organise lots of other different event, such as songs and music for patients in hospitals and Senior Citizens Clubs in the area
Of course this could not be done without the help of many other people, and musical groups in Ballyfermot, and the surrounding areas.
We would like to thank the Ballyfermot and Inchicore Credit Union for their help down the years and for sponsoring the Bus we travelled in this evening to the Mansion House, also some of shops and businesses in Ballyfermot and the surrounding area for their help over the years.
We always remember members of the group down the years that have passed on
Thomas Davis, Jack McMahon, Willian O’ Flaherty, Bob Keogh, and David Mangan and we are delighted to see some of their families here this evening.
Sean Brennan will be showing a video later that all these great people are remembered in also.
The other people we don’t forget are our Diaspora that are spread all over the world. We hear a lot from these people and how they have taken their talents that they learned in the Schools. Music Groups and Clubs here in Ballyfermot and are using them in their communities.
Rodney Oglesby will be singing a song he wrote remembering our Diaspora.
Thank you to Susanne Plummer, Martin Healy, Tom Phelan, Sean Coleman, Rodney Oglesby, Pat Craig, Don Harper Stephen Barrett and Denis Skerritt, who will be preforming this evening.
A huge thanks to Joan Wilson, a member of the Heritage Group for the lovely anniversary cake that she has made for tonight’s event.
Also to yourselves that have come along to help us share this great occasion. As we know so many of you have helped us over many years
Thank you all and enjoy the evening
