The "Mausoleum of Clesippo" was built in I° Sec. B.C. Attributed to Clesippo Geganio. According to the legend, he was slave who was freed by his mistress because of his skill as a lover. He became wealthy and built this monument in memory of his benefactress.
The marble from here can easily be found in some of the nearby buildings, like the country house built by Pope Pio VI.

We are in the infamous marshes of the Pontina, a once large swampy area that reached from south of Rome to just north of Lenola. The area was famous since antiquity for its malaria infested waters.
Mussolini managed to drain the land in the 1930's and it became home to many immigrants, especially from northern Italy. But during the war much of this work was undone by the Germans who flooded the area in order to bring back the malaria; therefore, they reasoned, defending the area from the Allies who were arriving at Anzio. An early example of biological warfare, I imagine.
The area is not thriving, many homes and farms are abandoned along the Via Appia, even if, as here, the land is sometimes still cultivated.

While my work commute in Rome will soon be coming to an end, the trips between Lenola and Rome will be increasing. So I thought I would create an album for things I see along the road. Of course, I have to be travelling alone. No one tolerates my driving now, just imagine if I start stopping every 5 minutes.
Here we are on the famous Appia, the road that the Ancient Romans built to connect Rome with Lenola.
