This gate overlooks the village green in Borwick in the north of Lancashire. Borwick Hall was first established as a pele tower to defend against the armed gangs known as Scottish Reivers in the 14th century. A number of what subsequently became castles and fortified manor houses began life in this way. There were many additions and changes to Borwick Hall over the years, and from the 1590s onwards it became a large manor house. Eventually, after WWII, it came to be owned by Lancashire County Council, which uses it as a residential outward bound and conference centre.
