I wanted to test my exposure skills with this one, but to be honest, digital technology makes this kind of image much easier than in the days of unforgiving slide film. Had I been using slide, I might well have wasted half a film to make this image, bracketing in increments over several stops. With digital, I can view the image on the histogram and have a pretty good idea about whether I'm exposing correctly. Even if I am a little out with exposure, I can retrieve most information in post processing (as long as the highlights haven't blown too bad).

There were some very heavy showers during the late afternoon of 5th May, which resulted in some large puddles forming on the paths around Attenborough Nature Reserve. I like how reflections often greater emphasis to a dramatic sky.

Before these crazy storms started obliterating our landscape, there remained a smattering of autumn colour in sheltered areas of woodland. This view shows a silver birch tree clinging on to its leaves in Bramcote Country Park on the outskirts of Nottingham.

I couldn't resist photographing the remains of this tree on my local patch at Bramcote Hills Park on the outskirts of Nottingham. This was always going to be a monochrome image from the moment I saw it, with the sun bursting through heavy cloud cover and illuminating the stark trunk.

Making the most of an unseasonally heavy snowfall, I slithered off my drive and headed for a local spot. Travelling far was not an option. First of all, my Corsa likes going sideways on icy roads and I don't have a 4x4 as a back up. Secondly, I had about six hours of school reports to write (nearly 5000 words by the time I finished yesterday afternoon), so I had to be realistic.
I always had a shot like this in mind if there was to be a late fall of snow. Bramcote Hills Park usually has lots of early Spring flowers and it was clear yesterday that they were suffering from the late cold spell.
