Sawley Marina is located right on the border between Leicestershire and Derbyshire. I hurriedly composed this view on the way to work and was on my way again within only 10 minutes. This was a true hit and run - not a bit like a painstakingly created shot like in the style of Joe Cornish.

This is one of my favourite winter locations - so taking a short here in summer was quite rare. The reason why I did take this shot was because I was driving past Sawley Marina and saw a sky that was a landscape photographer's dream - dark stormy clouds lit by late afternoon sun - irresistible.

I briefly stopped off at Trentlock on my way home from work to capture an image of Ratcliffe-On-Soar Power Station. The wind seemed to be blowing NE, which meant the trail of steam was in the right place for an attractive reflection in the Trent. The wind was bitterly cold and a cyclist looked at me with disdain as he went past. Only a landscape photographer can understand.....

Anyone who was out on this bitterly cold Sunday morning will know how tough it was taking photographs. I had to keep pacing up and down to keep my feet warm while waiting for the sun to come up - which was delayed by a very stubborn bank of cloud on the horizon!

This is one of my favouite local trees. Its shape has a beautiful balance to it and during the frosty weather it takes on even greater elegance. I converted to mono to emphasise this shape and felt that the spiky mass of rime coated brambles in the foreground complemented the spiky shape of the main subject.
