Made a very last minute decision to make the journey from Nottingham To Yorkshire. I figured that despite the drizzly weather conditions I could still make some landscape images using tree canopies for shelter and this is one image that I made using this type of fieldcraft. The exposure was about 10 seconds and I used 0.6 soft edge ND grad to hold some detail in the bright tree canopy and waterfall. I also used a polariser, fully polarised, to eliminate bright highlights in the water. This helped draw more attention to the swirling bubbles, which are a great feature at Cauldron Force.

Finally, I'd like to dedicate this image to flickr member Tall Guy, whose photography of Yorkshire has been an inspiration and has enabled me to make numerous online recces before making the journey up to Yorks.

This is a more successful effort of a shot I tried to execute at this spot nearly 10 years ago. Shooting in RAW has enabled me to retain the highlights in the rushing water whilst also giving the power to bring out the much darker (by at least 5-6 stops) golden trees on the far bank. The shutter speed also needed to be as short as possible (to retain detail in the water) yet with a small enough aperture for front to back sharpness, which was a fine balancing act!

I converted this to mono because I felt that I had better control of the contrast compared with making it a colour image.

I had to stand in the water in order to get the composition I wanted, with the water flowing through the image from the waterfall at the back to the front and out of the left hand corner. Once again, my wellies were a vital piece of gear.

This picturesque stone footbridge is located just below Cauldron Force in the Yorkshire village of West Burton. Despite the slippery rocks, the angle I favoured most was in the middle of the river, so I waded out composed the shot.
