I have to admit that I had mixed feelings about including the human element when composing this photograph of the pier at Porthleven, Cornwall. In hindsight, I think they provide additional interest.

This was one of those sunsets that developed from a subtle orange glow on the horizon to a fully ablaze pink sky within about 60 seconds. It was a beautiful thing to witness and I felt honoured to be in the right place at the right time

This image shows the magnificent sunset that occurred on the south coast of Cornwall on 23rd January 2023. From what started out as a dim glow on the distant horizon, the glow then transformed into a sky that was ablaze with deep burning pinks and oranges. It was hard to know where to point the camera, but the light show lasted a fair while - maybe 20+ minutes in total, so I was able to try about half a dozen different compositions. In this image, I wanted to show how relatively insignificant the village of Porthleven is in relation to the vastness of the sea

For this image, I just wanted to make a simple composition showing sea, rocks and sky. The long exposure disguises the fact that there were some strong waves coming in and that was making it quite challenging to keep my kit dry.

This was my first decent photo of 2023 and it went against all my usual methods of using a tripod and making a long exposure. This was a hand held effort, which I took on the railway bridge in Beeston. I was experimenting with a newly acquired second hand Canon 50mm F1.4 lens, which I was using fully wide open. The distant out of focus lights show the back end of a queue of traffic waiting at the crossroads where Station Road meets Queens Road.
