Landscape photographers borrow heavily from the long tradition of landscape painting. Artists like Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Edwin Church, and Winslow Homer were successfully defining the visual poetry of nature just as the camera was coming into existence.

These artists offered a heavily dramatized version of nature. If you have time, take a look at their work. You can see they were much more concerned with getting your attention and making you feel something than showing what was 'really there'.

There is a long-standing debate among photographers, how much editing is too much? Tastes differ between individuals, artistic movements, and the changing times. We must remind ourselves that this debate has played out for centuries among all artists and admirers.
