This is my first attempt at shooting a lighthouse I've been looking forward to for a very long time. This place was amazing!
There were some problems that made getting a good shot difficult. First, the wind was howling. I have a $40 tripod I bought at Target that I use for all of my photography, and it really showed its limitations here. Second, the low p.o.v. required to get the reflection in this puddle really hurt my depth of field, I shot this at f/11 because I felt the sharpness of my crappy 'kit' lens would be so poor at the higher f/stops that it would be pointless to crank it up. Plus I'd have to bump the shutter speed up near 30 seconds to let enough light in, and again, my tripod sucks. I also could have compensated for these problems by taking two exposures and combining them after in photoshop, but I also don't own photoshop.
It's hard to settle for a mediocre photo when you know the steps you need to take to get a good one. There are many, many things I look forward to shooting and re-shooting once I can afford some good gear.

Well, who knew an iPhone could take such a good photo. I managed to get out in the storm today, but not to take photos, to go cross-country skiing behind my house. It was a wickedly intense storm, with about 8 inches of fresh snow by this evening.

Many of you know that this is where I make a living, tending bar and waiting tables at the Sea Dog. It's hard work and the pay isn't amazing, but I love it and have the pleasure of working with some very cool people. It's also one of the prettiest locations in Maine.
The iconic Bowdoin Mill overlooks the Androscoggin River right at the head of tide, Brunswick Falls, and the Route 201 Bridge. The windows of Sea Dog face east, filling the restaurant with the light of the morning sunr. In the summer, there are few better places to relax and enjoy a beer or cocktail than outside on the deck. Wait until afternoon, as the sun sinks behind the bridge and lights up the mist rising from the waterfalls and cascades below the dam. Don't forget to keep an eye out for our resident bald eagles. We've seen them catching fish, hanging out in the trees, and even walking on the ice.
I had envisioned this photo for a while, just waiting for the snow to come and pretty up the landscape. I shot this during the 'blue' hour before sunrise, as I think snow is at its most beautiful during this time, and the building creates a nice contrast. Kim came along this morning, and it was great to have her along and then sit down together for breakfast sandwiches and coffee at Little Dog. Love you, Kim!

I closed out the year in one of my favorite places, Lookout Point in Harpswell. What an amazing one it has been. See you again in 2013.
