88F055 - Blessing of the Fleet at
Turners Park, 3125 Upper River Road, Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio River mile 600, June 1988
The
Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition which began at least 500 years ago in Mediterranean fishing communities and has spread around the world to include vessels other than fishing boats.
Standing on an elevated platform are the three "princesses" with flowers to be tossed into the river at the appropriate time.
In the foreground is a boy with a toy boat on a cord which will also be tossed into the water.
On the foredeck of the Boy Scout and Coast Guard Auxiliary boat
"Zachary Taylor II" is the priest (wearing a yellow
stole) who will sprinkle some recreational boats with Holy Water to ensure a safe boating season.
He will then travel downriver to bless the steamer "Belle of Louisville" at the Louisville wharf.
