Probably ferryboat
"Pauline" trapped in ice on
Ohio River near Petersburg, Kentucky
Ohio River mile 495
probably 1918
Many boats on the upper Ohio River were crushed by ice during the
bitter cold winter of 1917-1918.
As the ice goes through cycles of partial thawing and refreezing, the river's current forces it into piles of sharp-edged chunks known as
ice gorges or
ice jams. The grinding pressure can destroy a wooden hull.
I don't know if the "Pauline" survived the winter intact.
