Looking WSW from Louisville Boat Harbor at foot of Ohio St. (old name for Frankfort Ave. north of Story Ave.)
Boats, including "Sonny's Genie" and "Tons of Fun," in winter fleet configuration. Boats are tied together into a raft which rises and falls as a single unit.
Trees on Towhead Island can be seen at right.

Looking NNW from wharf near foot of Bingham Way.
City of Louisville worker painting lamppost.
Towboat "Alex M" (doc. # 979559) dredging mud away from wharf.
Clark (2nd St.) Bridge in background, with upper gates of McAlpine Dam in distance at far left.

In the photo, the crane has lowered the dredging blade (which is mounted on a frame attached to the bow of the barge) into the mud next to the wharf. The "Alex M" will back the barge out into deeper water, dragging the mud with it. The blade will then be raised and the procedure repeated until the water is deep enough for large boats to dock there. Some mud is deposited during each high water episode, so the wharf needs to be dredged every year or so, usually in the spring.
.
Twin-screw towboat "Alex M" (52x22, Cat diesels, 800 hp) built in 1991 by Marine Builders, Utica, Indiana.
Originally owned by Marine Transportation, Utica.
Sold in 1994 and renamed "Robert E. Murray" by Ohio Valley Coal Co. (part of Murray Energy), Alledonia, Ohio.

Looking N fr Louisville wharf near 3rd St.
.
Water taxi (actual name of boat is "Kon Tiki" (doc. # 256338)) preparing to dock.
This boat shuttled between the Louisville wharf and Towboat Annie's restaurant (just upstream from Clark Bridge in Jeffersonville, Indiana) during Derby Week.
Apparently TARC (Transit Authority of River City) leased the "Kon Tiki" from its owner (B.B. Riverboats of Covington, Kentucky) for this temporary taxi service.
.
The twin-screw towboat "Kon Tiki" (63x15, GM diesels, 330 hp) was built in 1948 by Missouri Valley Steel, Leavenworth, Kansas.
Originally named "Delores Billie", the boat was owned by William Pietrzyk.
In 1964, the boat was sold to Kansas City [Kansas] Riverboat to be used for passenger excursions and renamed "Westport".
The boat had a capacity of 49 passengers and pushed a 210 passenger excursion barge.
Sometime before this photo was taken, the boat and barge were sold to B.B. Riverboats, Covington, Kentucky, and renamed "Kon Tiki".
In 1997, the boat was renamed "River Raft".
The boat's documentation expired in 2012 and its current status is unknown (at least to me).
