Portland Canal upriver from McAlpine Locks:
Corps of Engineers workboat "Emerson-Meredith" (LD-765) with maneuver boat (left) and old cranes from tainter gates.
The cranes were mounted on rails running along the top of the gate structure and were used to install maintenance bulkheads. They have been replaced with newer cranes. P&H stands for Pawling and Harnischfeger, the manufacturer's founders.
The maneuver boat was used to raise and lower the old wicket dams. It is missing its derrick.
In background are replacement gates to be used if miter gates in 1200-foot lock are damaged.
(Quick replacement is necessary since there is no auxiliary lock during construction of new 1200-foot lock.)
