MING CHINESE
In 1853, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry of the United States sailed to Japan demanding the opening of trade. Perry used the threat of naval war ships to break the longstanding isolation of Japan from Western countries. This book was published around this time of change in Japan when people were becoming interested in the outside world. The book contains one double page color printed hemispherical map of the world, along with 44 colored drawings and descriptions of people from various countries - portrayed in somewhat fanciful native costume, largely in pairs, male and female. Each portrait has explanatory text on the facing page.
