The game was held on July 8, 1990. Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 on a penalty scored by Andreas Brehme in the 85th minute.

Beckenbauer is only one of three players to have won the World Cup as both player and coach. The other two are Brazil's Mário Zagallo and France's Didier Deschamps.
