This rare species is restricted to the Bellinger and Orara river valleys of north-eastern NSW. It is a large tree in its natural habitat but the timber has no commercial value.
The Aniseed Myrtle leaf has one of the highest known concentrations of anethole, the compound that gives its aniseed/anise flavour and aroma.Crushing the leaf will soon reveal these unique qualities.
It is used for flavouring and has traditionally been used to assist with weight loss, lactation and stomach complaints.
