Family : Meliaceae

Photographed here on Lord Howe Island although I am uncertain if the tree is endemic to Lord Howe.
Found north from Milton on the NSW South Coast and west to Carnarvon National Park in Queensland, although it is a widely planted tree outside rainforest situations, even doing well in dryer inland areas and as far south as Melbourne.

Once common in school playgrounds it is being removed due to the seed drop and the tendency of the roots, like a lot of trees, to lift concrete.
Seed drop has also been reported to have caused problems on roads and for pedestrians.

The flowers are quite showy but the seeds less so as well as being poisonous.
The tree is seasonally defoliated by catapillers which can be reduced by placing a barrier or grease around the trunk to prevent them climbing.
