Many of the eucalpyts here at Scenic World have emerged with rainforest establishing underneath.
Apparently they began establishing in 1895 after mining for kerosene shale ceased which in 2009 makes many of them at least 114 years old.
This particular tree was 54 metres tall in 2001 and apparently had been growing at approximately 5m per year.
Scenic World, is just south of Katoomba, NSW, Australia and is home to the steepest funicular railway in the world, the Katoomba Scenic Railway, which was originally built to facilitate coal and oil shale mining in the Jamison Valley. An interesting display of past mining activities is well worth taking time to see.
Taking either the railway or the cableway one descends 545 metres steeply to the bottom of the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Jamison Valley. Once at the bottom a 3km elevated interpretative timber boardwalk allows easy access to the rainforest.
The Blue Mountains/Katoomba/Leura Tourist precinct is extremely popular with tourists and should definitely be included in any itinerary if in the Sydney region of Australia.
The Woodford Tree, also in the Blue Mountains National Park, is a Eucalyptus deanei. It was measured in the mid 90's at over 78 metres tall but a recent measurement put the Woodford tree at 71 metres tall.
