Family : Balanophoraceae
In Australia Balanophora is found growing as a parasite on the roots of certain rainforest trees in tropical and subtropical rainforest from Cape York to near Noosa Heads in SE Queensland.
There are two subspecies :
Although both species have been recorded in NE Queensland this plant growing in Mossman Gorge is Balanophora fungosa subsp. fungosa which occurs in CYP, NEQ and southwards as far SE Queensland near Noosa Heads at an altitudinal range from near sea level to 700 m.
The other subspecies, Balanophora fungosa subsp. indica occurs rarely in CYP with isolated records in NEQ at an altitudinal range from near sea level to 900 m.
Main difference between the two species is that Balanophora fungosa subs fungosa (these photos) is monoecious and Balanophora fungosa subsp indica is dioecious.
Balanophora fungosa subsp indica is quite distinctive with its host tree being Dysoxylum pettigrewianum.
